Titanic with the Arabic Victim

One hundred years have passed since the sinking of the Titanic, considered the worst disaster the seas have ever witnessed in the twentieth century. In the middle of the extensive coverage this shocking event has received, hardly anything has been mentioned about the Arab passengers that perished on the ship.

In addition to the list of victims which reveals all the Arabs who died in the tragedy were Lebanese except one Egyptian, the proof of Arab presence on the ship was evident in the 1997 blockbuster movie directed by James Cameron.

In the film “Titanic,” an Arabic speaking mother is heard urging her daughter to hurry when she ship starts to sink. The Lebanese accent with which she says “Come! Come!” in Arabic shows her roots.

Her husband replies, also with a Lebanese accent, “Wait! Let me see what we can do,” while panicking in one of the third class corridors. Behind the Lebanese family appears the film’s protagonist Leonardo Di Caprio, also an inmate of the third class, running with Kate Winslet in tow.

The Lebanese husband is seen flipping through the pages of a book that contains a layout of the ship in order to look for a way out. Other than this scene, which lasted for only six seconds, nothing was heard of Arabs who died in this tragedy even though the world keeps remembering the victims on every anniversary.

This clip from the movie is shown on Al Arabiya followed by real footage from the only video recorded inside the ship since it sailed on its way to New York. The video was discovered 27 years ago.

Titanic tragedy felt in Lebanon

The village of Kafr Mishki in the Rashaya District southeast of the Lebanese capital Beirut suffered the most in the Titanic tragedy. The village, whose population does not exceed 500, lost 13 of its residents.

“The church of Kafr Mishki will hold Sunday a Mass for the victims and the congregation will observe a minute of silence to mourn their death,” village mayor Khalil al-Sikli told Al Arabiya in a phone interview.

Sikli added that more than 11,000 natives of Kafr Mishki have immigrated to several parts of the world and are currently scattered over five continents.

“More than 6,000 from Kafr Mishki are in Ottawa, Canada alone.”

The village of Hardine in the Batroun District in northern Lebanon comes second as far as lives lost in Titanic are concerned.

“Hardine lost 11 of its residents in the Titanic [disaster],” the village mayor Bakhous Sarkis Assaf told Al Arabiya.

“When the ship started sinking in the first hours of dawn, those 11 passengers gathered in one corner and started reciting verses one of them improvised in the style of Lebanese vernacular poetry.”

According to Assaf, who says the story has been narrated down generations, the verses Hardine residents recited right before their death were: “O Hardine, weep and lament the death of 11 of your youths who did not exceed 25 years old. Five of them are single and the others are married. None of them is old. They’re all 25.”

Like Kafr Mishki, Hardine will hold a Mass in its church to remember its victims in Titanic, Assaf added.

“I just wish that the Lebanese government would also remember those forgotten victims especially at the 100th anniversary of the tragedy.”

Assaf from Pennsylvania told the story of a 19-year-old boy called Daher Shadid Abi Shadid from the village of Abrine in northern Lebanon. Abi Shadid accidentally killed a girl from his village while experimenting with his gun.

“Fearing the retaliation of the girl’s family, Abi Shadid left the village not knowing where to go until his uncle, who lived in Pennsylvania, sent him some money and told him to travel to the U.S.,” Assaf told Al Arabiya.

Shadid first went to Marseille in France and from there boarded the Titanic which stopped at the UK to pick up more passengers before sailing to New York.

“Shadid escaped a fate in Lebanon only for his uncle to receive his corpse from the Titanic,” he said, again recounting a story as told throughout generations.

One of the most striking details revealed to Al Arabiya during the search for details about Arab victims on the Titanic was provided by Syrian-American writer Laila Salloum Elias who wrote a book titled “The Dream and then the Nightmare.”

Elias relied on Arab newspapers published in New York at the time of the ship’s sinking as information for her book. One such story came from the then famous al-Hoda newspaper.

According to Elias, who also listened to testimonies from victims’ families, several of the Lebanese victims were shot dead for refusing to obey the orders of the ship’s security personnel.

One was killed for trying to get on a life boat reserved for first class passengers.

Top 10 Dating Statistics Everyone Should Know

While I am a firm believer in fate, destiny, and karma, not everybody is willing to trust in "the stars" to determine their future. You may have wondered to yourself, "What is my chance of finding a mate" Well, there are various statistics to support the answer to that question, and I have listed several of them below. You may be surprised at some of them, especially the number of people that use online dating.

1. 40 million Americans use online dating services. That's about 40% of the adult American single population. It's not just a fad anymore, and it just might be your ticket to finding happiness.

2. 44% of the adult American population is single. That's over 100 million people, so your odds are actually much better than you think.

3. On average, there are 86 single men to every 100 single women in America. So, the odds are slightly in favor of men finding a mate. This ratio is a bit better in the Southwest, and in warmer climates such as Texas, Florida, and California, the ratio in some cities actually favors the women.

4. 50% of New York state adults are unmarried, making it the best state for single people. Washington, D.C. actually boasts a 70% single rate, making it the best area (although not a state) for single people.

The states with the worst ratios are Idaho and Utah, with 40% and 41% single, respectively.

5. 51% percent of single people surveyed say that flattery is the best way to attract someone. According to Are You Normal About Sex, Love, and Relationships? 25% also say to use touching as a way to flirt is very effective, and a surprising 23% say that the best way to let someone know you're interested in them is the old schoolyard method of passing word through a friend.

6. Profiles with photos get over twice as many responses. According to economists at MIT and University of Chicago, profiles with photos get over twice as many emails as profiles without them. Sounds like a good enough reason to me to go ahead and put that photo out there on your profile.

7. You have 15 minutes to make a first impression - if you're a woman, that is. If you're a man, you have a little more cushion. Women usually take about an hour to decide if you're going to have a second date.

8. #1 relationship argument is over money - according to a poll by the University of Denver. So, don't feel too bad if you can't agree about who's paying for the date. It's rather common, and not exactly a foretelling of things to come.

9. 48% of breakups in online relationships occur through email. It may seem rude or insensitive, but this is the world we live in, especially in the setting of an online relationship.

10. Only 2% of men find relationships from a barstool. This number only goes up to 9% for women. So, get down off that barstool, and try your luck somewhere else, such as online, or through a network of friends, where 63% of married couples claim to have found their mates, according to the book Sex in America: A Definitive Survey by Robert T. Michael.

Education - Public Vs Private

Share Free Education - Another continuing battle in the world of education and politics is public versus private education. The arguments for and against each are compelling. This is another one of those debates where there is no winner or loser, right or wrong, though there are those who disagree. We'll present each side of the argument without taking one side or the other.

The obvious arguments for a private education are the quality of that education itself, or at least so the supporters say. Supposedly, a child who goes to a private school gets better teachers, newer books, individualized attention, smaller classes and the so called better class of person to share his pencil case with. The person who goes to a private school doesn't have to worry about being picked on by bullies. Private schools are simply the ideal utopia for your young child.

The arguments for public education are not as obvious, especially with all the bad press that most public schools get. But one thing that most people don't realize about public schools that is not true about private schools is that a teacher must be certified by the local educational association. This is not true about private schools. So while the general theory is that you will get a better quality of teacher in a private school simply because of the nature of the school itself, this is not necessarily true.

But the biggest argument for public education really comes down to money and the community. Unfortunately, the money that is allocated to a public school is based on the attendance of that school. If that majority of students in the area go to private schools then the attendance at public schools drops which causes a drop in their funding. This doesn't just affect the school system itself but the community as well. The less money the schools get, the less money the community gets. What then happens is that the children who go to the public schools don't get the education that they are entitled to because they don't have enough money.

This leaves the parents of the child about to attend school with a difficult decision to make and that's only if they are even aware of this problem. And that is where the problem itself begins. Parents are not informed. They think that sending their children to private schools doesn't affect them any more than just the money they have to pay for their education itself. In the process of doing this they are taking money away from their community and ultimately lowering the standard of living in the community.

For everything in life there is always a trade off. The debate between public and private education will continue, with both sides fighting hard to get their share of the pie; public schools fighting for more funding and private schools fighting for vouchers so that more kids can afford to go to private schools. The truth is, until these two institutions can find a way to coexist with each other, there will be no winner in this war.

Listing Education on a Resume

So you've gone to the time, expense and effort to complete some aspect of formal education. Or maybe you started to work on this, but then inevitably, life happened... had to take a job to pay the bills, got married, had kids, moved, etc. etc. There's a universe of things that life can throw at you that can interrupt even the most well-intentioned plans for education.

There are some rules of thumb out there when listing education on a resume which should be considered.

1. DON'T list the year you graduated. Unless you are in an education, government, scientific or highly technical field where having a date of graduation is essential; please don't broadcast how old you are by including this information. (Human resource managers do the math!) Sure, if you are an adult learner who just got done with a degree, it's new and important to you just like it is to a person fresh out of high school who immediately went to college. However, resist the temptation to perhaps look younger by listing the graduation date!

With the exception of the four fields mentioned above, the cold, hard truth about education is this:

Most employers really only care whether you graduated... Yes or No.

They don't care what your GPA was, how many times you made it to the Dean's list, what scholarships you landed, and sure, you can list that you graduated as magna cum laude or summa cum laude... but that often isn't a deciding factor as to whether or not to hire you- it just becomes distracting with all of the scholarships, awards, grade points, etc. Keep it clean and simple.

2. A common mistake recent graduates also make is that they want to list their education FRONT AND CENTER... naturally because this is generally the MOST IMPORTANT THING the person has ever done in their lives to date. However, most human resource managers are really probing for what kinds of experience that the person has, not their education. So the best advice is to put the education later in the résumé rather than near the beginning.

3. DO list all of your education. Some people in this economy are becoming sensitive about feeling 'over-qualified' or 'over-educated.' Think of it this way- employers are in the catbird seat right now... they can afford to hire workers that they couldn't dream of hiring just five years ago. So they are 'cherry-picking' the top candidates and if they can find a top leader in a field who is willing to come work for them, they'll gladly take them. Who wouldn’t?

Additionally, if you didn't complete a degree, you can indicate: "Program coursework in: (area of study).

Give yourself credit for the time you've put into it, even if the end result isn't what you had hoped for. It shows initiative and a desire to improve your knowledge and skills.

I've had a few clients that I've worked with who had put down a degree name on their résumé, but it turned out that during our consultation, that, well, they never ever REALLY ended up finishing their degree.

This kind of misrepresentation is one of the oldest tricks in the job search book... if this sounds like you, it would be in your best interest to be as forthright as possible about your educational background. Human resource managers are well aware of this trick!!! Quite honestly, the EASIEST background check to do in the world is to verify whether a person graduated or not from a particular institution. Fudging it or trying to convey a different impression is a fast-track to the trash bin for your résumé.

So this is an 'either' or an 'or' situation.

EITHER you got the degree OR you took program coursework in a field.

If you are currently in progress, you can indicate:

Degree name (spelled out, please): area of study (anticipated completion date: ______)

As for the rest of your education, anything else that is not from a formal, accredited institution or career school falls into the 'professional development' category, and can include everything from industry certifications, workshops, trainings, continuing education units (CEUs), conferences, seminars, conventions and the like.

You'll want to call this specific section "Professional Development," which conveys to an employer that you are always actively taking steps to improve and hone your skills so you can do your job better.

Not working right now? Have some resources? Try keeping up on industry trends by registering for a class in your field through a trade association. It's a great way to keep your 'toe in the pool' and stay current.

Keeping your mind engaged while looking for employment is very important. Sometimes, being laid off is the very opportunity needed to open a new chapter for professional enhancement... there simply wasn't time for it previously. You never know where this can lead to! A recent client of mine spent the money to get certified with another industry credential. One of the requirements of the certification was to take an exam. When she showed up at the exam location, she found out that she was the only unemployed person there- everyone else was there through their company. The amazing thing was that she got three highly-qualified job leads by talking to the people there at the exam location... and she was so thrilled that the exam itself wasn't the highlight of the day!

Practicing English Abroad - Without Having to Pay!

Education - Whenever the advantages of earning an advanced degree in an English-speaking country are mentioned, "improving my English skills" and "practicing my English" always rank high among them. But, as the experience of many a foreign student has shown, practicing - let alone improving - your English is, as the English saying goes, "easier said than done."

Understandably, many students studying abroad gravitate toward students from their own country or region, both for greater ease of conversation as well as to be with others who understand their cultural perspective. Valuable as such friendships are, they often get in the way of using English and refining the skills, speaking and listening in particular.

Furthermore, a lack of confidence inhibits many foreign students from putting themselves forward in English. Even when they have the confidence and willingness, students from other countries often do not know how - and where - to create situations outside the classroom in which they're likely to learn English by using it. The following suggestions, some of them familiar and obvious, others more novel, come from clever students who have found ways to make the most of their time in the English-speaking world.

All of them agree that making as many native English-speaking friends as possible is the most helpful thing of all. That doesn't necessarily mean living with native speakers, but if you can - in a dormitory or shared house, apartment or flat situation - you're sure to get your English up to comfortable speaking, listening and general comprehension standards at the fastest rate, having the most fun in the process.

English-speaking students are as interested in making friends with people from other countries as you are in getting to know them. Many of them have not traveled extensively outside their home countries or continents - and are as aware as you are of the value of getting experience of the ways people from other cultures think and interact.

A good thing to avoid in making native-speaker friends is not to propose spending time together so that you can practice your English. Even though it is part of what you want from the interaction, it is only part, and it sounds less appealing to native speakers than simply asking to go out for coffee or some other appropriate means of getting to know someone. It sounds like there is work or effort involved on the part of the native speaker.

In fact, the people you approach with the idea of "practicing your English" are less like to decline your invitation because they are unwilling to be helpful than they are to feel that they are not "qualified" to teach and might have a negative rather than a positive influence on your English. The reality is that no matter how they speak English, they have something to teach you, since, as native speakers, they are examples of the kinds of English speakers you can expect to encounter in your later, professional or personal life.

Beyond making English-speaking friends and living with native speakers, here are some ways to consider expanding your English speaking and comprehension skills that take you into more formal, adult parts of the English-speaking world. In some of them, you may even learn vocabulary that will be useful for your academic discipline:

  1. Go to the bank with a mission that involves fact-finding in English. As one example, it would be good for you to learn how have money wired from a foreign country - yours - into a bank account you establish in your host country. You may need it. If the branch of the bank near your university is a small one, you may just want to walk in and talk to an officer. If it is a larger bank, you may want to call ahead for an appointment to speak with someone. That would push you even farther into the trickier business of doing business - in this case simply making an appointment - in a second language over the telephone, which is one step more difficult than doing the same thing in person. You could even say that you are gathering the information for an article you are writing for your school's foreign-student bulletin. Then you could actually write up what you learn and present the information to your fellow foreign students - even if there is no official foreign-student bulletin.
  2. Go to the post office to find out how best to ship an item home. This will probably be a walk-in task, but you are likely to find postal clerks helpful if you look earnest about your need to know. Find out as many shipping options as possible, both to gather information you might really find useful but also to see how long you can sustain a conversation about a complex topic. Do not be shy about asking to have anything you are told repeated until you understand it completely. That will encourage the clerk to find other means - usually just different words - to answer your question. This is a highly important English skill: learning the different ways there are of saying basically the same thing.
  3. Go to a fitness center or other facility that offers nonacademic activities you enjoy and ask about membership and privileges. Universities often have many of the facilities you need on campus. Still, you could also go off campus to investigate other kinds of activity centers - which could range from a stable that gives horse-riding lessons to an art studio. Even if you do not actually join - and do not feel pressured to; you are just investing possibilities (and expanding your English without saying so) - you are sure to enlarge your vocabulary and increase your sense of ease talking with strangers in English. They are there to provide a service or sell their product, so you can safely assume that they are already inclined to be as helpful as possible.
  4. Go to a travel agent and plan a trip. The trip could be anything from an excursion in your host country - of which there are sure to be many - to a more adventurous trip to a neighboring country. Travel agents are, for obvious reasons, accustomed to dealing with people who do not speak English as a first language. Again, try to sustain the conversation as long as possible within reason. Ask about the full range of transportation and accommodation options, and see how many different recommendations the agent can make that fit with you time availability and budget. Do not feel under pressure to buy anything you do not actually want or are not prepared to do. It is normal for customers to leave a travel agent's office with a variety of options to consider.
  5. Apply for a part-time job. Even if you do not need to work part-time or cannot under the terms of your acceptance at your host university, check out nearby jobs. Inquiring about jobs is likely to introduce you to vocabulary you would encounter in no other way. Even better, if you present yourself well and make a strong, well-worded application, you could even be asked back for an interview. Interviewing is a highly valuable skill in countless situations, including academic ones, and getting all the experience you can with it will be invaluable. If you are so successful that you are actually offered the job, give yourself credit for a job already well done (fact-finding; interviewing) - and then accept the job if it actually appeals to you or politely decline it if you do not want or need it. If you were skillful enough to get one job offer, it is plausible that you got others, too. Thank the employer for the opportunity and reply that, regrettably, you have accepted another offer elsewhere.
The opportunities are limited only by the size of the community in which your university or school is located. The suggestions above are offered to give you ideas about how to use your imagination to create situations for you to expand and practice your English - without ever having to say, "Could you please help me practice my English all"

How To Find Slope In Mathematics

Here is how to find slope. A slope is usually defined as the steepness or inclination of mountains, pyramid structures or even only a line. In mathematics, the higher the slope, the steeper the construction goes. Occasionally, additionally it is defined as the ratio of the “rise” divided from the “run” of an object. Wherein, rise signifies the volume of units that y values have moved up or down although run is defined to become the measurement on how far the x values have gone, regardless of whetherheading appropriate or left. You will find diverse formulas for fixing the slope of the line.

Formulas :

In Algebra,

y = mx + b

in which, ‘m’ represents the slope, ‘b’ could be the y-intercept from the line and ‘y’ could be the y-coordinate where the intersection with the line and also the axis happens. This formula is generally named because the slope - intercept kind.

Another variation of your slope - intercept form is,

y - y1 = m(x - x1) or m = (y2 - y1 / x2 - x1)

In Calculus,

m = ?y / ?x

wherein, ?y and ?x would be the distances from the y and x axes respectively. ‘m’ is the slope. ? or ‘delta’ means difference or modify.

In Geometry,

m = tan ? or ? = arctan m

exactly where, ‘m’ s the slope, tan ? could be the angle.

Red Hat Exam Study Strategies

Preparing for Red Hat exams can be a daunting task. The scope of the topics covered and the depth of knowledge required are enough to make even experienced Linux professionals balk. Furthermore, the pass rate is notoriously low. These exams are difficult! However, that is precisely what makes the certifications so valuable.

Red Hat describes their exams as “practical” and “hands-on”; candidates are expected to configure live systems. Real-world experience is important, but it may not always be enough on its own. Because the exams cover so much material, it is often the case that certification candidates will be required to configure services on the exam that they have never used in the field. This is why the road to certification success usually includes a combination of real-world experience, practice, and both classroom and independent study. I will discuss how to optimize your practice and independent study, using the methods that worked best for me as I prepared for the RHCSA and RHCE exams.

In order to become competent on so many subjects, you must begin by breaking down the exam material into manageable chunks. Fortunately, Red Hat does some of the work for you; for each exams Red Hat provides a list of Exam Objectives on their website:

Red Hat has similar pages for all of their advanced certifications as well. These Exam Objectives list all of the topics that may appear on a given Red Hat exam. As you may notice, some of these objectives are rather vague. Here is where your work begins; you will be using the Red Hat Exam Objectives as a starting point to make a comprehensive list of items to practice.

Begin by pasting the Red Hat Exam Objectives into your favorite text editor. Under each exam objective, list every possible action you can think of that might fulfill the requirement. By “action” I mean some change to system configuration, be it using a command, installing packages, modifying a file, etc. If you can not think of any actions to list for a particular objective, consult relevant man pages, files in /usr/share/doc/, and the Red Hat's Deployment Guide, which can be found here:

Once this task is complete, you have an exhaustive list of every item that might appear on the Red Hat exam. Your next step is to ensure that you can fulfill each of the testable items on your list. Start at the top of your list again and, for each action, list a specific set of steps to take to complete it (commands to enter, changes to configuration files, etc). This can take lot of time and research to complete. Once complete, though, we have a discreet and thorough practice regimen. If you do not know how to complete an action, consult the resources above. One Course Source also provides a helpful Exam Prep Guide with further resources, which can be found here:

Now you can begin practicing with confidence that you are covering everything that you need to know. The best way to study will be by actually going through each objective and each action step by step on a live system. If possible get an evaluation copy of the latest version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). Your other choices are Fedora and Centos, however you want to make sure you get a version that most closely resembles the current version of RHEL.

An actual installation on a physical machine or a virtual installation will both make excellent environments to practice in. In my studies, I preferred using virtual installations because I could install multiple Operating Systems, allowing me to easily test network services across two virtual machines. It is also easier to re-install systems or use snapshots to reset configurations at the beginning of each practice session.

I would recommend printing each action or exam objective on a 3”x5” card with the step-by-step instructions you developed on the back. Now when you begin studying, each note card acts as an exam task prompt. Perform each task on your live system, don't just memorize the answers! If you successfully complete the task, set the card aside. If you have any trouble, consult your instructions, complete the steps, then place the card at the bottom of your stack. Keep going until no cards are left.

This method can make for grueling study sessions (as long as six to eight hours when I first started studying), but it insures that you revisit each exam objective at least once during a study session and that you spend more time on areas that are weak. Of course, this process can span a few sessions if it takes too long to complete at first. If you take the time to develop good note cards and study routinely, you should have little trouble come exam day.

Good luck!

Bored of Your Current Teaching Job – Consider a Career Change

A teacher is someone who has the ability to influence and shape one's future. However, owing to increasing functional and organizational discrepancies, many teachers are considering a career change. However, teachers are often unaware of their own potential and the career options available.

Teachers seem to be increasingly unhappy with their jobs as a result of growing pressures attached to the job. As if planning lessons, researching various sources and communicating the ideas and knowledge to the students were not a full time job by itself, they are increasingly on the receiving end of being subjected to growing government regulations and the parent interference. Is there any wonder quite a good number of our teachers are seeking a career change?

While looking for a career change, teachers are often unaware of their career options and consequently, end up not seeing the naturally available career options. They underestimate and often discard the importance of the skills acquired whilst teaching. Namely, teaching requires numerous skills from excellent communication ability to exceptional organizational acumen, and from being able to write well to being able to plan lessons and execute them proficiently. These skills are not just exclusive to teaching -- they are fundamental skills and form the basis for many other rather rewarding career options.

Additionally, one of the key advantages that they have over other competing candidates is their vast knowledge on their subject specialty. For example, someone teaching Computers would have a better command over the subject and will be better aware of the structural fluidity of the matter. Not only does this skill make them more desirable to the employer but also it will help them accelerate their career faster as they will be efficient in executing tasks while at their new job. This in turn will help them enjoy the change.

In order to fully understand their own potential, teachers would be well advised to enroll themselves into a comprehensive and efficient career change program. These programs are designed specifically to cater to the needs of career change teaching. Designers of these programs understand the teacher’s job specifications and research extensively to provide teachers with options that will make them enjoy their job the most. They understand the fact that sometimes even being successful at a job does not mean you will be happy with it and that the worst thing is to end up in an equally dissatisfying job despite having changed your job.

These programs deal in detail with the options that exist pertaining to your acquired skills and make you aware of the things best suited for you. Furthermore, they also provide you with the most appropriate and interesting jobs that you will find hard to resist. In other words, their main goal is to provide you with a complete package that ensures your happiness and make sure your next job won't be as tedious as your current teaching job.

It requires perseverance, hard work and determination to reach to the top. One must also realize that this field is not about success. It is about loving what you do and a burning desire to change someone’s life for the better. If you want a career that will let you make enormous amounts of money, then you need to give education a second thought. The purpose of education is not a mercenary one, it is the job satisfaction that is more important. To earn a lot you need to plan your career carefully and take up jobs that are high paying.
